It’s Gala season in the art world and that means there are art auctions everywhere. Auctions! Now’s the time to get some fine art from some fine artists while benefiting a great cause to boot. In the coming weeks, we’ll be exploring auctions of all sorts. For starters, ABC No Rio on the Lower East Side of Manhattan is having their 2011 Gala & Benefit Auction this coming Tuesday, May 3rd.

Art by Fawad Khan donated to the 2011 ABC No Rio Art Auction.

This silent auction will include work by over 20 members of the artist group Colab—the collective that founded ABC No Rio in 1980—along with works by Kathe Burkhart, CRASH, Willem de Kooning, Hans Haacke, Robert Indiana, Pia Lindman, Josh MacPhee, Ryan McGinness, Claes Oldenburg, Yoko Ono, Kembra Pfahler, Chris Stain, Swoon, Lawrence Weiner and many others. See the complete list of all artists and a preview of their work.

No Rio has meant many things to many people, but its mission remains constant: a commitment to political and social engagement, to an expanded vision of possibility for the lives of our neighborhoods, cities, and societies, to a place where people share resources and ideas to impact society, culture, and community. This benefit will allow this tradition to continue and flourish. —Steven Englander

Proceeds from this event will benefit ABC No Rio’s Building Fund. Their existing building—which they bought from the city of New York for one dollar in 2006— is distressed and in disrepair. The new construction will dramatically improved facilities for their cultural, community and educational activities.

Check out this nice write up on the Tenement Museum’s website about the history of the building that houses ABC No Rio.

ABC No Rio has raised over $4 million of the $5.25 million needed and construction is anticipated to begin before the end of the year for this bold, new building and facilities.

In addition to supporting ABC No Rio’s ambitious plans for its new building, the benefit auction is a great way to get your hands on a wonderful piece of art.
