No summer is complete without some time at the beach. Before you strip down and suit up, check out Christy Luo’s line of handcrafted swimsuits, Kooj. The Brooklyn-based swimwear designer spent years in the fashion industry before setting out on her own. We found out where Christy gets her inspiration and how to go from a day at the beach to a night on the town.
What is your inspiration for such unique pieces? Where do you source your material?
The inspiration for most of my pieces comes from myself. I believe myself to be a “typical” girl that knows what she wants. A year ago, I gained a lot of weight and was too out of shape to wear a 2 piece swimsuit, so I started making my own one piece swimsuits that are very flattering and hide parts of my body that I am not too proud of. My pieces are generally very flattering to the body. All my materials are sourced locally in New York City and all fabric is hand selected by me.
What style of swimsuit is the most universally flattering?
The most flattering swimsuit is able to cover up parts we don’t necessarily want to reveal to the whole world and highlight all the areas we are proud of. Therefore I focus on comfort and ease because swimsuits are the most vulnerable piece of garment any girl will wear in public.
What is your ideal cover up?
The ideal cover up is versatile, practical and able to adjust from beach to post-beach.
For a day at the beach, what is your secret weapon?
Obviously, protection first. Make sure you have the right sun protection, stay hydrated and have fun. Life is tough enough and the beach is our easy, simple, affordable escape.
If you could bring back a swim suit from any decade, which one?
Hands down, the 1950’s. The swimsuits then were the most glamorous and feminine. They embraced the female body yet were still modest.
How do you turn a swimsuit into an outfit for out on the town?
I wear a lot of my swimsuit as tops. Sometimes, I put my favorite pair of jeans, shorts or skirt over my swimsuit and I am set. Often people don’t even realize that I am wearing a swimsuit. My signature patchwork bustier tops has been really popular for this look. Girls are going nuts over this original piece of mine and have been wearing it under a vest or blazer. It’s an instant outfit that goes from the beach to the streets.
