It seems like as soon as August ends, our brains go fully into fall mode. It’s not quite time to bust out the pumpkin carving tools, but it is nice to start swapping out summery things for something a little more seasonal…like cinnamon! Here are some great DIYs that utilize the spice in creative ways: from all-natural cleaning aides to refreshing beauty products. It’s time to get spicy.
Household Cleaning Spray
The cleaning powerhouse white vinegar gets a facelift with this easy and cheap DIY. In this homemade house cleaner, orange peels act as a disinfectant while also helping to cut the sharp vinegar smell. You’re skipping any chemicals or irritants, and making something out of household essentials and food scraps. As a bonus, the combination of orange and cinnamon makes a nice transitional scent from summery citrus to the warmer smells of fall. Here’s to looking forward to cleaning!
A Skin-Clearing Honey Cinnamon Face Mask
A lot of beauty products can be rough or ineffective on your skin. This DIY for a natural (and reportedly delicious smelling) face mask is customizable, letting you adjust the ratio of ingredients for your skin type. While honey and cinnamon both work to destroy bacteria on your skin, cinnamon also acts as a stimulant, giving you a healthy glow by drawing nutrients and oxygen to the surface. Throw in the super-exfoliant nutmeg and you have the triple-threat of skin cleaning.
Homemade Apple & Cinnamon Granola Bars
Now that summer is over, it’s back to school and work. For busier schedules, whip up these cinnamon and apple granola bars as a delicious on-the-go snack! They’re chewy, tasty and filled with all-natural ingredients like nuts, dried apples, flax seed and coconut oil. Always keep some on hand (or pack them in your kid’s lunchbox) to make sure hunger pangs don’t result in a junk food binge.
A Cinnamon & Orange Peel Air Freshener
Once again, cinnamon and orange make a pretty powerful duo. This time they’re skipping cleaning your home in favor of making it smell fresh and autumn-worthy! This DIY for an all-natural air freshener is a cost-effective way to work the warm scents of the season through your house. Simply combine them, and add hot water to create an instant fresh-smelling liquid. But be warned: the delicious smell may make you very hungry.
Soothing Cinnamon Tea
Every September, like clockwork I come down with some kind of cold (already looking forward to it!). This quick and easy recipe for cinnamon tea sounds like the perfect remedy for the sore and scratchy throats that seem to pop up this time of year. The hot milk soothes, powdered ginger fights nausea and the cinnamon adds a warming touch. Sickness aside, this looks like my new favorite cold weather comfort drink!
While it’s always a good idea to skip a few hair-washing days, it can be problematic if you’re on the oiler side. This DIY for homemade dry shampoo skips the chemicals in favor of cheap and natural ingredients. The ever antibacterial cinnamon also works to stimulate your scalp and get those roots looking their best. And with individual recipes for light and dark hair colors, you’ll find the perfect formula (and excuse to sleep in tomorrow).
All-Natural Cinnamon Mouthwash
While mint covers up bad breath, cinnamon actively removes it by killing odor-causing bacteria. Combined with the antibacterial properties of honey and freshening power of citrus, you’re in for some seriously fresh breath with this homemade mouthwash. Forget the giant bottles of chemicals you can’t pronounce, and whip up a batch with things you probably already have at home.
