Brooklyn’s stop for vintage and reclaimed office furniture, Two Jakes, may be located on one of the hippest streets in Williamsburg today, but that was not always the case. When the store first opened in 1996, Wythe Ave was mostly full of warehouses, semi-trucks, drugs and prostitution. But Two Jakes remained steadfast in their 10,000 square foot space—and as the neighborhood changed, so did they. Owner Alex Walsh notices that he’s needed to adjust inventory to keep up with the demands of his changing clientele and gentrification of the now ultra-hip Williamsburg.
But these changes are exactly why Alex enjoys running the store so much. He says that there is a huge variety of diverse people who buy from Two Jakes, because everyone needs office furniture at some point or another. In fact, he seemed especially excited that a rock and roll booking company just bought several of his file cabinets. Two Jakes is breaking all the rules of boring office furniture, by picking only high-quality, unique, mostly vintage pieces with style and functionality.
While you’ll see lots of vintage Eames fiberglass chairs and Jens Risom for Knoll pieces in the shop, Two Jakes does not limit themselves to exclusively vintage. When I stopped by, they had a sofa by modern brand Blu Dot, a cabinet made from reclaimed wood, and rocking chairs made from recycled milk jugs. They receive shipments weekly and their pieces move quickly, so each visit is potentially completely different.
And why the name Two Jakes? At one point, there was an employee named Jake which added to the charm, but the title is a reference to the 1990 film sequel to Chinatown. Stop by Two Jakes for office furniture that is solid, high-quality and quintessentially Brooklyn.
