Why do we love thrift shops so much? Is it the goods themselves? Or that feeling that comes with finding something truly unique, the thrill of the deal, the epiphany of discovery? While some shops offer a carefully curated collection of goods presented to perfection in an airy, idealized display room (offering the thrill without all the work), others offer an experience that feels more like entering a hoarder’s den and somehow, against all odds, coming out on top. Green Village Used Clothing and Furniture falls into the latter category which is by no means a criticism.
Offering over 10,000 square feet of used clothing, furniture, bric-a-brac and assorted paraphernalia you’d expect at such a place, the odds of finding something unique, something truly worth taking home, for a fraction of the price you’d pay at a well-curated vintage shop, make this thrift shop worth visiting if you have some time and some patience. Though the store is packed to the point of overwhelming, the incredibly variety almost ensures that you won’t leave empty-handed. Practically a museum of used goods, Green Village has been in business for over 25 years—the first 15 years in Williamsburg and the last ten in their current location in Bushwick just a few blocks from the Jefferson L stop.
The eclectic collection is garnered predominantly from estate sales, as seen by the rotating cast of clothing, shoes, furniture and home goods that range from contemporary to vintage to antique to dilapidated. Highlights include furniture of all styles stacked from wall to ceiling, a well-stocked collection of vintage industrial office furniture with all the slightly scuffed charm that comes with years of use, chair sets of every possible style, assorted chandeliers, sweet vintage china sets and clothing by the pound (2$ with a 5 pound minimum).
If you’re seeking the thrill of the hunt, Green Village shouldn’t be missed. While there’s a slight method to the madness (items are often grouped in like category), your best bet is to slowly scour the racks—you never know when you’ll find something amazing hidden behind a faded relic.
