Drawn to the romanticism of two icons of Americana — surfing and cowboys — Kevin Jacob can’t say which he loves more. His store, the aptly-named Bklyn Curated, features pieces honoring both. Retro surfboards lean against the walls of this Greenpoint shop while brass, horse-shaped buckles and hand-tooled, leather belts are displayed on tables. Kevin grew up surfing in Long Island but has traveled throughout the west for his work as a designer. His shop has the feel of a carefully curated museum where all the items are worn in and waiting to tell you their story.
Bklyn Curated has been open a little more than a month, but Jacob’s design chops run deep. He’s been an interior designer for about five years and worked at Ralph Lauren for almost 15 years. He continues to design sets, brand showrooms and homes with pieces he collects from flea markets, auctions and antique stores on his wide-ranging travels.
“I just buy what I think is cool,” he explains. “Industrial, Mid-Century Modern, American Folk Art — those are the styles I’m drawn to.”
The space feels warm and authentic and you can’t help but touch items made of iron, paper and leather. “I think everything in here is special,” he says. “I buy whatever stops me in my tracks. There’s no rhyme or reason other than that.”
Outside on the back patio, the Stars and Stripes wave in the breeze. Empty mismatched chairs dot the cement and a “Mountain Drive-In Theater” sign hangs on a back grass-covered wall. As the summer rolls through, Kevin hopes to have the outdoor space buzzing with gatherings and parties as Greenpoint locals hear about the new find in their neighborhood.
