Catering to folks who enjoy eclectic decor, owner Roberto Guzman has a clear appreciation for the beauty of vintage furnishings. Considered by Chicago’s insiders to be the shop to go for gently-used, unique designer furnishings, Accent Minded also attracts clients from all over the world. When Roberto joined Krrb and listed his wares, we couldn’t resist inviting him to chat.

Hi Roberto! Where are you from, and what brought you to your current place of residence?
I was born and raised in Pilsen, a Hispanic neighborhood in Chicago known for its culture and art. I don’t think I will ever move out of Pilsen. It is home.

How do you define ‘home?’
They say home is where the heart is, and it’s funny that our particular section of Pilsen is referred to as The Heart of Chicago. I would personally define home as my sanctuary. The place I long to return to after being on vacation or after being at work all day. It is the place than I can truly be myself.

What is the most awesome thing in or about your current neighborhood?
Definitely the art and the food. Lots of new things brewing in Pilsen lately. Plus, we just got our very own Gino’s East and Giordano’s! Pizza heaven, yum.

What is your favorite place to discover local treasures?
Well, it would have to be my very own shop in Pilsen, Accent Minded. You can find so many cool home furnishings and also as the name implies, accent furniture. You never know what kind of treasure you will find here.

What blogs or websites do you visit regularly?
I regularly visit Pinterest and Houzz. I’m kind of addicted.

As a kid, were any of your toys and clothes hand-me-downs?
I am the youngest of seven children so all I knew were hand-me-downs. Sometimes I would even use my brother’s things before they were even handed down, like my brother’s trench coat and a really cool Swatch watch he had. But a word to the young kids out there looking to do the same: Don’t make the same mistake I did and keep Polaroids of the crime. They will get you caught up every time!

Have you ever taken home an object you found in the street?
Oh my god, yes! I once took home this super Mid-century Modern dresser that someone just put out in the alley. The thing was in near mint condition other than a few kids’ stickers that were on it, but those came right off. Best find of my life!

Hoarder or a minimalist?
A recovering hoarder.

What’s the most cherished object you possess?
A vintage ox blood red Chesterfield sofa. Do I really need to say anymore? It is a staple in my home.

Thanks Roberto!
