Music is a great way to let out all of that built up creative energy, but it can also be quite a pricey hobby. New instruments can range from easy-on-the-wallet to gonna-cost-you-a-pretty-penny! That shouldn’t discourage you from starting a band though—some of my favorite musicians (RIP Jay Reatard) used buckets as percussion on early albums, so I think you can manage. Here’s some tips and tricks for you to start your very own band!
Some people think you can have a band without guitar—those people are wrong. You can look for a used guitar or get creative with a cigar box and some ingenuity. There’s something about that feeling you get after accomplishing something and this Electric Cigar Box Guitar looks relatively easy to make. If Great Planes Handmade can construct it, I’m sure you can too!
Next, we’re going to need some nasty bass lines. Again, you can go the used route if you want but isn’t it more fun to build something yourself? Everyone plays a Fender Bass, but not everyone plays a Superterrific Tub Bass. It’ll take about an hour to build and only costs roughly $30 in material, if you don’t already have some of the supplies lying around at home. By the time you’re done building, Emmet Otter’s Jugband won’t have a string to pluck compared to you!
Last but not least, you’re going to need some percussion to keep the beat. With these DIY Drums you’ll be banging around like the little drummer boy in no time. There’s a few different approaches you can take, but whatever you choose, make sure you’ve got some rhythm and soul!
If you’re looking to round out your band there are a few more instruments you can add. First, why not build a one string guitar for some sick solos! If you’re trying to keep it ska, a DIY PVC Horn will do just the trick. If all else fails, just take some inspiration from Vocal Trash and use everything and anything you can!
