Well, Niagra Falls has frozen over and its negative degrees right now in New York City. I’ve never been more ready to flee the Northeast. After weeks of wearing layers upon layers in hopes of staying warm, I’m taking a weekend trip to the Caribbean. When you only have 72 hours of fun in the sun, you don’t take much. After all, it’s a getaway not a take-it-all-with you. See what to bring and where to go.
The Right Bag
Think small, light and carry-on. There’s no time to fuss at the airport with checked luggage during a weekend getaway. You need just enough time to decompress and get a boost of vitamin D from the sun. This Moroccan travel leather bag ($195) is perfect for stashing a few changes of clothes, a trashy beach read and some sunscreen. Notice that I didn’t say laptop so leave it at home—this weekend you’re off the grid.
Given the constraints of your luggage space and your easy going attitude—only bring items that are multifunctional. Lucky for you, pretty much everything doubles as a beach coverup. For me, this vintage Mexican embroidered dress ($45) does the trick. It’s fun and you can take it from the boardwalk to a fancy dinner out.
After weeks of mushing around in black snowboots and dark, heavy wool coats, indulge in a few pops of color. Not only will the retreat boost your spirits, surrounding yourself with bright colors will visually inspire you for the upcoming spring season. (It is coming, right?!) I like these Isabel Marant sandals (€15) for padding around town and on the beach. Also fun is this Malia Mills bikini top ($45) in a red orange hue that pairs well with just about anything.
