Once a year, relationships from all around the world come together to celebrate love of all kinds on a holiday known as Valentine’s Day. Now regardless if the relationship is romantic or platonic, the standard usually is to share some kind words and a small token of sorts. Remember when Valentine’s Day was just exchanging valentines with fellow classmates? Now flowers, chocolates and a romantic dinner for two is the norm, albeit, boring. For all of my fair weather friends, Valentine’s Day is ripe for an adventure!
When it comes to planning a romantic adventure, creativity (and maybe a little ingenuity) is your best friend! Simple searches for events or date ideas in your area can get you on the right path. Sites like Groupon can help you get inspired and even score discounted date packages. It also helps if you store up possible date ideas over the year when suggestions arise, as well as a definitive no-go list. Does your date get sea-sick? Then dinner on a boat is out, but maybe a bonfire with a bbq is in…
Consider flipping the script and trying something a little unorthodox. If your schedules allow, make it a day date starting with homemade brunch. Or you can learn a new skill together like dancing, painting or a new sport. You can even make Valentine’s Day a family affair and take your kids out to a food festival, an interactive art museum, a bike tour or camping trip. Chances are if the event is fun for everyone involved, it’ll make a great date.
For me, this Valentine’s will be spent on the beach—kayaking during the day and then watching a classic movie put on by Miami’s own mini-urban drive-in theater at night. To make this date even more special, we’ll have food and drinks packed in a cooler so we can spend as much time outdoors as we want. And since it’s always a good idea to incorporate a handmade item, I’ve painted a very special, one-of-a-kind Valentine’s Day card. By taking advantage of my city’s opportunities and some careful planning, I was able to concoct a Valentine’s Day that my date and I are both excited for.
So, why not have a little unconventional fun on Valentine’s Day? Break out of the usual date monotony and do something new.
