Here at Krrb we love doing it ourselves. Whether it’s a wallet made out of bike inner tube or luggage repurposed into side tables, there’s nothing quite like the feeling you get after building something yourself. That’s why it’s so great to know that if you go looking in any city you can find a nice, little DIY shop that might just have everything you need.

This week, we’re exploring a few DIY Shops in Chicago. If you’re a native or just visiting the area, these are the go-to shops for your DIY needs.

If you’re more of a techie than a crafty type, the Robot City Workshop is perfect for you. Beginner classes are for all students starting at the age of 5 or if you already have some experience in robotics there are intermediate and advanced classes too. You’ll start simple and progressive to more in-depth code writing classes. The classes are absolutely perfect for anyone who has always dreamed of building a robot friend of their own.

Robot City Workshops is located at 3226 N. Sheffield Ave., Chicago, IL 60657.

One Strange Bird

One Strange Bird focuses on art classes. Adults can participate in a four-week course or find time in your busy schedule for a one-off painting class. Either way, you can enjoy these BYOB courses with a little bit of liquid confidence. But if you’re looking for a little family fun, they’ve got you covered. They offer plenty of children’s art classes and starting this fall they’ll have day camps that you can drop your kids off at. The icing on the cake has to be the art activity themed birthday parties they offer though.

One Strange Bird is located at 2124 W. Division St. Chicago, IL 60622.

Blue Buddha Boutique

Blue Buddha Boutique, or B3 for short, focuses on the art of chain maille. Chain maille is wearable art made out of little metal circles and B3 founder Rebeca Mojica has been teaching it almost as long as she’s been making it. A number of the best best-known instructors have studied with Rebecca so clearly she knows a thing or two about chain maille.

Blue Buddha Boutique is located at 1127 W. Granville Ave. Chicago, IL 60659.

The Wishcraft Workshop

The Wishcraft Workshop has it all! From art classes to sewing lessons to crafting fun, if you want to learn a new hands on trade this is the place! With all these options you can gift your friends handmade goods on their birthday, baby shower, or any other special occasion! Also, if you know a Girl Scout or Brownie troupe that needs some art badges, there are classes for the little ones too!

The Wishcraft Workshop is located at 3907 N. Damen Ave. Chicago, IL 60618.

Blackstone Bicycle Works at Experimental Station

The Blackstone Bicycle Works focuses on the Earn-a-Bike program. Woodlawn children, aged 9-16, start from the ground up—learning how to fix and maintain their own mode of transportation. Not only that but the youth will work closely with the business owners to learn how to properly conduct themselves in a busy bike shop setting. Since 1994, the Earn-a-Bike program has brought hundreds of youths self-esteem, useful life skills, and a refurbished bike to cruise around on.

Blackstone Bicycle Works at Experimental Station is located at 6100 S. Blackstone Ave., Chicago IL.

There you have it folks! A couple of great DIY shops in YOUR city. Now you don’t have an excuse to not make all those things you’ve been talking about making but had an excuse for. Go DIY!
