We love television as much as the next guy. But we get particularly giddy when we get to pick apart the decor in search of deeper truths. Join us as we investigate the who, what, when and especially the why of interior design drama.
For many of you, the fall season is about pumpkin spice lattes, apple picking and an cozy sweaters. For me, it’s about ABC’s hit drama Scandal. The popular political thriller show features Olivia Pope, who handles crisis management in Washington, D.C.
Sure, there are plenty of great shows on television right now, but it’s the twists and turns of Olivia’s life keep me glued to Scandal. Everything about the show from the array of mysterious characters to Olivia and Fitz’s will-they-or-won’t-they-get-together relationship to Olivia’s perfectly decorated home draw me into her story, which is partially based on former George Bush administration press aide Judy Smith.
While many viewers ended last season with one collective gasp of (spoilers warning!) over the revelation of Olivia’s dad, we most certainly spent the better half of the past two seasons gasping at the precise way Olivia styles everything from her outfits to her home. Let’s be real, we all want to be Olivia Pope. Even under the toughest pressure Olivia Pope is a true gladiator, one who wears Prada. From her perfectly casual slouchy sweaters to pristinely pressed suits she gives a new found elegance to contemporary design and “cool under pressure” attitude.
As a professional ‘fixer’ Olivia has to be perfectly composed to inspire confidence from her high-profile DC clients. This perfection carries into her home life as well as you’ll notice from the simple design of her abode. Just as stylish as her clothes, Olivia’s home meshes perfectly with her contemporary style, furnished in a neutral palette, clean lines and soft tones. She is too busy to fuss with complicated surroundings. Everything has its place. Olivia’s apartment is becoming a favorite conversation topic amongst Scandal fans who pay attention to the details. For example, there aren’t any indications of Olivia’s upbringing. “You don’t see baby pictures, a mother or father,” Production Designer Corey Kaplan has said previously. Viewers don’t know a lot about Olivia’s past and so her home reflects that aloofness.
Luckily for fans, contemporary pieces are rather easy to shop for. We’ve put together a few key items to make your home fit for a gladiator.
Visual inspiration is all around us these days, and it’s no great leap to imagine wanting to live in the homes we visit — via our TV screens — every week. What do you think? would you design your home around Scandal?
