Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan is a writer, educator, entrepreneur, father, videographer and even a therapist, if only for your apartment. These days, the esteemed founder and CEO of beloved home decorating site Apartment Therapy can also be called a curator, because he has pulled together a stellar selection from the vast array of props that will be auctioned off at Lights, Camera, Auction – a real deal live auction on November 3.
The action takes place at (and benefits) Film Biz Recycling, a group of folks dedicated to saving the world one movie at a time by rescuing props from ending up in the landfill, and making them available for sale or reuse.
We couldn’t ask for a better set of eyes to help sort through the vast array of stuff to be had… Maxwell honed his patience-skills as a New York City school teacher and then retired in 2001 to begin the humble practice of being, in his own words, “the guy who walks around bearing good will,” by making house calls, assessing people’s spaces and helping them to formulate a plan to improve their surroundings and, as such, improve their lives. Therapy for your apartment, plain and simple.
A book (Apartment Therapy: The Eight Step Home Cure) and a similarly themed website evolved into the mini-empire that is now Apartment Therapy, with three books, and blogs covering five design/lifestyle related topics (tech, baby, green, cooking and, of course, home) spanning six different cities for over five million unique visitors a month.
Maxwell has doled out advice on how to best utilize space (he should know—for years he lived an apartment measuring less that 300-square-feet) for HGTV’s Mission Organization and the Home & Garden show Small Space, Big Style, The New York Times, The New York Observer, and even the Wall Street Journal.
Check-out Maxwell’s chops below as he leads all comers on a 20 minute a day home cure that, if followed, should have your abode in tip top shape in just 20 days:
Maxwell is one of those people who manages to be everywhere interesting design is happening, churning out posts at a dizzying rate, so we are super excited to have him with us as part of our auction next week, and secretly hope that some of his uber-organizational skills rub off!
