Market Fever — Five Questions with Holiday Market Extraordinaire, Deb Klein

Deb Klein organizes the Brooklyn Craft Central holiday market with the help of her right hand, Danielle.

For the past five years, Deb Klein has been rounding up artisanal makers in her borough to present one of the best holiday gift markets this side of the river. The Brooklyn Craft Central Holiday Market spans two weeks with different craft and food vendors each weekend. Held at Littlefield Art Space in Park Slope on December 15-16 and December 22-23, this shopping event is one you won’t want to miss – it’s a fun place to hang out, grab a drink, and browse and buy local and handmade gifts for the season. Plus, we’ll be there to wrap your presents with our special brand of secondhand love. Before you go, be sure to preview what’s for sale at the market by visiting Krrb.com/explore/bkcc2012.

We caught up with Deb before the market flurry to see how she’s spending the holidays. Read on, reader!

Market Fever — Five Questions with Holiday Market Extraordinaire, Deb Klein

Deb’s dad, Bob Klein is somewhat ‘famous’ at her markets. He gets to know the vendors and shops from all of them. Pictured here with local vendor Lio & Linn.

Hi Deb! What’s on your holiday shopping list this year?
Lists aren’t my way to get gifts – I just seek small pieces that strike me as perfect for particular friends and family members. I split my gifting between those, and small donations to animal rescue groups.

What’s your preferred season drink; eggnog with rum, mulled wine, or spiked hot chocolate?
I love mulled wine. I also drink plenty of cold drinks in winter – sangria is essential all year round. Also coffee and Kahlua is a must.

Are you planning on making any gifts this year? If so, what will you be crafting?
I considered making a large batch of homemade coffee syrup, splitting up in small bottles with homemade labels – and I still may – but it won’t be for gifts, more like just house or dinner/dessert gifts. We’ll see… I want this to taste perfect, so I may work on it for 2013.

What’s your Brooklyn-esque holiday tradition?
Throwing my holiday market! I don’t have any holiday traditions, really. Very mellow.

What do you think of the explosion of holiday pop ups, fairs, markets? Any favorites, besides (obviously) BKCC?
I really have so little time to enjoy the other holiday markets when I’m busy promoting my own. In the past, my favorite event like this was always Renegade – the curating is stellar – but not during the holiday season. I am hitting the proverbial pavement, and leave the rest of my own shopping for my vendors…

As for the growing number of shopping events – it’s going to happen in a city of this size and personality. I say the more the merrier. I definitely don’t try to compete with lots of food, live music, etc. My formula has worked well up to this point – my main goal is VERY GOOD SHOPPING – and people seem to love it!

Thanks Deb!
