If you’re anything like me then you absolutely love autumn. It’s hands down my favorite season. Along with the chunky sweaters, boots, crisp air, and seasoned treats, the fall welcomes warm, golden colors that serve as perfect additions to our homes. If you’re itching to decorate for the fall season and can’t wait until Halloween to get crafty, try out some of these DIY projects to get your home in the autumnal spirit!
1. Knit-Wrapped Vases
This first project is super simple and instantly adds a cozy factor to your home as the temperatures begin to drop. Simply take a plain vase or glass, add some hot glue, and wrap yarn around it—you can cover either the whole vase or only a portion of it in yarn. Mix and match colors and textures, and then add in your favorite fall florals. I personally love the thick knit look with some branches!
2. Mini Caramel Apples
You can’t get through fall without paying some homage to the apple! What’s better than picking apples from the tree and turning them into fresh dessert? Anything mini! I knew I had to share the sweetest part of an apple harvest when I came across this mini caramel apple project. Apple pie, you may have found your match this season.
3. Fall Air Freshener
The smells associated with autumn are some of my favorite—from cinnamon and nutmeg to cardamom and well, everything (I don’t discriminate between delicious smelling spices). While the coffee shop is a dependable source of wafting spicy-sweetness, fall scents deserve to be experienced during nonbusiness hours, too. Lucky for us, you can make your own air freshener at home to keep your space smelling as divine as your morning cup of Joe.
4. Gourd Lanterns
I know, I know- by this point you’re getting pretty pumped about your local pumpkin patch, and you’re probably ready to carve a jack-o-lantern already. Don’t rush the season though! By carving a gourd into a lantern you can have just as much fun and add some understated decor to your front porch or stoop.
5. Gold Dipped Feather Garland
Ok, so maybe you aren’t as ‘into’ autumn decoration as I am. Don’t worry though—there are alternatives like this feather garland that can be repurposed for parties happening all year long. While this low effort project is definitely on trend for the fall, it adds a whimsical, bohemian flair to your home or event no matter what season we’re in.
6. Leaf Jewelry Dish
If there’s a surface in your home that you want to spruce up, here’s a fun option for you. Construct a cute little tchotchke to hold your jewelry or spruce up a side table. Disclaimer: Your friends might not believe you made it yourself!
7. Pumpkin Succulent Holder
My favorite local farm is open and selling pumpkins already, but we’re still in September, and I’m not ready to commit to the full-on-pumpkin-patch-explosion in my living room just yet. This is the perfect way to ease into the pumpkin spectacular that commences soon enough.
8. Dehydrated Orange Slices
These are great for two reasons- you can decorate with them, and you can eat ‘em! Edible decor? Sign me up! Add them to a tray with other seasonal items, like acorns, branches, and cinnamon sticks, or add them to your tea! It’s a win-win.
9. Twine Pumpkins
I’m not always a fan of DIY projects, but this one is pretty cute. Haven’t the time to carve a pumpkin? Or perhaps you want to be more creative this year. Recreate whimsical little pumpkins made out of twine instead.
10. Painted Gourds
Ok, this project is amazing. Though I love the natural colors that are associate with autumn, these painted gourds are a very fun take on what nature provides. Also, it’s a chic version of pumpkin painting that your neighbors haven’t thought of yet! Use these lil’ gourds as an excuse to add new pops of color to your indoor and outdoor spaces, or stick to the color palette that you’ve perfected over time. Your options are endless here.
11. DIY Pumpkin Spice Latte
As a coffee connoisseur (in training), I feel a duty to include this one. The phrase “pumpkin spice latte” has become synonymous with the spoken word “autumn.” Whether you’re buying into the craze or not, this foamy drink is here to stay. This fall you don’t have to run out to the nearest coffee shop to get your fix, though. Stay in those PJ’s, save a few extra bucks, and make it for yourself at home!
